Should I Replace My Air Conditioner, or Have it Repaired?

Air-Conditioner-TechnicianWith summer upon us, the strain on your air conditioner is likely quite a bit higher than at other times of the year. The more you rely on your air conditioner to keep your home cool, the more wear and tear the system is going to experience. That will make problems more likely to occur, and could even cause the system to permanently break down. If your air conditioner is experiencing issues, and you’re not sure whether or not to replace it, read on.

How Old is Your System?

The choice between repairing or replacing your air conditioner is always one of cost-benefit analysis. One of the first factors you need to consider in this process is how old your air conditioner is. The average air conditioner lasts around 10-15 years, under ideal circumstances. If your air conditioner is only a couple of years old, you should probably repair it. Replacing a system up to a decade early is not a good way to get a good return on investment from the system.

On the other hand, an air conditioner that is older than 15 years should probably be replaced rather than receiving repairs that won’t keep the system up and running much longer.

How Frequently do You Need to Repair Your Air Conditioner?

It’s a good idea to take stock of how much money you’ve spent on air conditioning repairs over the last few years, and compare it to the cost of the system as a whole. Normally, an air conditioner shouldn’t need to be repaired more than more than once every few years. If you need to repair your air conditioner multiple times a year, or even once every year, there is probably something that is making the system far more prone to issues. You should consult with a professional, at that point, about whether it’s really a good idea to keep repairing your air conditioner rather than installing an entirely new system.

How Much is Your Air Conditioner Costing You From Month to Month?

Your air conditioner is going to cost more or less from month to month, depending on how much you use the system. However, if your air conditioner is costing significantly more to operate than it should be on a monthly basis, that’s not a good sign. Air conditioners start to lose efficiency as they age, mostly due to the buildup of wear and tear. The more efficiency is lost, the harder the air conditioner is going to have to work in order to compensate. That’s going to cost more money the longer the system is in use. Depending on how much the air conditioner is costing you to use on a monthly basis, it might be a good idea to replace it as soon as you can.
